TU Delft policy on research data storage#
Organizing entity#
Researchdata is bound to a research project.
Space#
Each researchproject is entitled to 5 TiB of storage for the duration of the project. The costs for this are covered by TU Delft. [1]
When more storage is required or the storage needs to be extended beyond the project’s duration, costs are incurred. Please see our costs page for more information
Duration#
Researchdata can be kept for the duration of the project. Researchers can be granted an extension for storing (archiving) the research data beyond the lifetime of the project for a maximum data-lifetime of 10 years.
Possible scenario’s for actions after the data-lifetime expires include deletion of the data (without further consultation) or re-evaluation at that moment in time by pre-recorded data owners.
Responsibilities#
data owner[2]#
The data owner is responsible for organizing datasets, the validity of its content, and the validity of the metadata for the datasets.
The role of data owner usually lies with the researcher executing the research project.
storage provider#
The storage provider is responsible for delivering a technical space for data storage that conforms to a given service level agreement. The service level agreement defines the countermeasures a storage provider has taken for any disasters occuring at the storage facility. Also parameters such as reliability of access (network) and speed of access and data transfer are part of the service level agreement.
The role of storage provider lies with the parties that TU Delft contracted in this role. Currently these are: TU Delft IT Department and Surf.
Data owners always need to be aware that no storage provider can guarantee 100% reliability!
research data manager#
The research data manager(s) are responsible for providing researchers access to the data management environment (iRODS) and for communicating with researchers and storage providers on requirements and performance of the data management environment.
